The Church Bell

As a child my land was made of gold and silver
Everything I passed was bathed in a light so tender
To wander with weary eyes is the thief of time
Everything I find is yesterday’s wine
All but my love
With her the church bell chimes
The playground colour fades and innocence is washed away
That train pulled on a string, is what you dread pulling in
Speeding you away, out of the painting and into grey
Oh what a shame
To wander with weary eyes is the thief of time
Everything I find is yesterday’s wine
All but my love
With her the church bell chimes
And time stands still for a while
Well
To wander with weary eyes is the thief of time
Everything I find is yesterday’s wine
All but my love
With her the church bell chimes
And time stands still for a while

Oh I’ll be home in the morning and I will sit down by the fire
And we can talk about my leaving and my wanderings in the wilds
How I lost that low lamplight and found four years of flight
I thought I’d bed down with the birds and I would turn and shun the world
But there’s no trees upon the moor, so I built my nest of bones
In the bracken, rock and gorse. I didn’t feel like a bird
One foot in front of the other
I’m walking out into the wind
I’m crawling out of the heather
Where I had vowed to bed right in
I’m off to see my old mother
I’m gonna tell her where I’ve been
I’m gonna tell her where I’ve been
And now my nest upon the moor, it wasn’t too far from the sea
So I would curl my coat around me and beat a path down to the beach
Where I would gather flotsam treats and wear them like a king
One foot in front of the other
I’m walking out into the wind
I’m crawling out of the heather
Where I had vowed to bed right in
I’m off to see my old mother
I’m gonna tell her where I’ve been
I’m gonna tell her where I’ve been
So after 4 long years, I bore a bitter snarl
And all that pawing at the ground had left my hands all gnarled
All I had been was gone and I needed to return
And as I made my way
Down into the town
I could hear them say
Bring him out the storm
Come on in get warm
And don’t be sorry son
One foot in front of the other
I’m walking out into the wind
I’m crawling out of the heather
Where I had vowed to bed right in
I’m off to see my old mother
I’m gonna tell her where I’ve been
I’m gonna tell her where I’ve been

Dancing like a lighthouse on the coast
Moving with the rocking of a boat
That light won’t ever stay still
And I don’t know how to feel
Like I did when I was dancing like a lighthouse on the coast
I heard that there’s a man in town
He’s come down and back around
To play at his piano
For a whiskey and some brown
So I go and drop my anchor
I hear the stamping of the feet
Hell I’ll go down to the marina
My oars are moving to the beat
Dancing like a lighthouse on the coast
Moving with the rocking of a boat
That light won’t ever stay still
And I don’t know how to feel
Like I did when I was dancing like a lighthouse on the coast
That trumpet man by the piano
He’s cutting right through my misery
And all my time at sea is forgotten
Those port town girls make me weak
And as morning rises I’ll be looking in your eyes
In the middle of the floor we’ll be dancing real slow
As the piano man plays one more song and it goes
Dancing like a lighthouse on the coast
Moving with the rocking of a boat
That light won’t ever stay still
And I don’t know how to feel
Like I did when I was dancing like a lighthouse on the coast
Dancing like a lighthouse on the coast
Moving with the rocking of a boat
That light won’t ever stay still
And I don’t know how to feel
Like I did when I was dancing like a lighthouse on the coast

Where have you gone
Where have you gone
I looked you up
But you’re not in the book
I even tried your sister
But she didn’t pick up
Where have you gone
My oldest friend
And I hope that I will find you
Smiling down the road
God knows if I will find you
But maybe there’s a chance
Last time I saw you
You said that you were ill
You’ve been seeing things
You don’t know what’s real
You were carried home
You’ve been on these pills
You said, “I’ll see you around
If I’m ever well”
And I hope that I will find you
Smiling down the road
God knows if I will find you
But maybe there’s a chance
So I called on your parents
And they’d heard you’d moved abroad
I don’t know if I can reach you anymore
My oldest friend
My oldest friend
You know what to do
Just call on out
And I’ll rush to you
And I hope that I will find you
Smiling down the road
God knows if I will find you
But maybe there’s a chance
So I called on your parents
And they’d heard you’d moved abroad
But I know that I will reach you in the end
My oldest friend

The Warmth

I’m way down
Moderate, moderate, moderate, moderate is what they say now
It’s hanging on a knife edge, hanging on a precipice and I should know now
But it’s so much easier than to exercise self-restraint in the face of adversity
Oh completely, I totally agree, I could be face down, clean out by the end of the working week
But I will be alright
Oh I will be alright
But I guess I should get someone
To verify that
I’m way down
Moderate, moderate, moderate, moderate is what they say now
I heard it on the telephone, down the wire into my home all the horrors
All the horrors
But I will be alright
Oh I will be alright
But I guess I should get someone
To verify that
To verify that
To verify that
And I will take it piecemeal
Enough to blur the eyes
Slipping down and out of sight
Warm and nice
I will be alright
I will be alright
But I will be alright
Oh I will be alright
But I guess I should get someone
To verify that
To verify that
To verify that

Phil Maguire London, UK
I have always been intrigued by storytelling and the old folk songs of times gone by. With these in mind, I have worked to
create my own voice and stories out of the history of these tunes. I'm regularly showcasing new songs across London and the UK. I hope to bring along a mixture of intimate folk dreams and soaring ballads.
My debut album ‘Valley Of My Dreams’ will be released on 10/11/2023.
